OYAK CEMENT BECOMES FIRST CEMENT COMPANY IN TURKEY TO MAKE A GLOBAL NET ZERO COMMITMENT

OYAK Cement has become the first cement company in Turkey to make a “Net Zero” commitment, in which companies agree to apply the criteria necessary to set science-based targets on their activities in order to limit the rise in global temperatures to 1.5°C by 2030. While the transition to a low carbon economy takes place across the world, OYAK Cement has been placed among more than 2,000 companies operating under the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

Carrying out activities that lead the industry towards a more sustainable world, it continues to work at full pace in line with its 2050 Roadmap, focusing on the risks regarding climate change and the transition to a carbon-neutral world. Within this scope, OYAK Cement, the first Turkish company to make a “Net Zero” commitment by applying the criteria required to determine science-based targets that will limit the global increase in temperature to 1.5°C, has shown its difference once again with a value-oriented business model in the light of R&D and innovation works.

OYAK Cement initiated its activities with the SBTi in 2020, making a commitment that will appear on publications by the SBTi itself, the UN Global Compact and We Mean Business as part of the Race to Zero, a campaign supported by the UN.

Having determined its direction in terms of sustainability as a way to contribute to Turkey’s 2053 Net Zero target, OYAK Cement is making important investments to decrease energy costs, further develop waste supply systems, establish recovery plants using waste heat, construct more environmentally-friendly units, and significantly increase its usage rate of alternative fuels.
